    Join Us June 25-27, 2018

    Dear Federal, State, and Local Affiliates of the IAFF 3rd District, 

    IAFF District 3 Vice President and NE Conference Chairman Jay Colbert announces the following: 

    You are hereby notified that, pursuant to the Constitution of the New England Conference of Fire Fighters, the 35th Biennial New England Conference will be held at the Foxwoods Fox Tower Hotel in Mashantucket, CT on June 25, 26, & 27 of 2018. The Mashantucket Pequot Fire Fighters Local 4746 and the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut will be hosting the Conference and are suggesting arrival for Monday, June 25. The NECFF is the caucus of all the IAFF Locals in the 3rd District, and gives us all an opportunity to meet collectively in New England ahead of the IAFF Convention and hear from the General President and General Secretary-Treasurer who have been invited to speak. IAFF Peer Support training and IAFF PEP Classes will be offered.  This will be our opportunity to hear and discuss Convention Resolutions.

    This year we will have a special presentation from the Fire Chief  Greg Cassell and Local 1908  President Steve Thompson from Clark County Nevada, who will detail the response to the October 1, 2017 mass shooting.  This is valuable presentation is not to be missed.

    Additionally, you will receive updates from each of the State Presidents detailing how these difficult economic times are leading to unprecedented attacks on our membership, and how each state is dealing with these issues.  

    Resolutions will be accepted until Conference registration begins, but the business of the Conference will be greatly expedited if Resolutions are submitted to the Secretary-Treasurer prior, submit Resolutions to the NECFF, 43 Centre St. Concord, NH 03301.

    VPFF Scholarship

    Applications are now being accepted for financial assistance for spouse and legal dependents of the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters members (including spouse and legal dependants of Line of Duty Deaths members).  Applications and supporting materials must be mailed no later than March 1, 2020.  All applications and supporting materials will become the property of the VPFF.

    Local 21 Regrets To Announce The Passing Of Retired Captain Tim Pleau

         Local 21 regrets to announce the untimely passing of Retired Captain Tim Pleau.  Captain Pleau started with the Saint Paul Fire Department on May 11, 1992 and retired on June 30, 2019.  Funeral arrangements will be posted when available.    THE FAMILY HAS REQUESTED THAT NO FACEBOOK POSTS ARE DONE AT THIS TIME.

    Jim Smith Named State Fire Marshal

    Replacing Bruce West as state fire marshal is Jim Smith who previously served as deputy state fire marshal. Fire Marshal Smith who has been in the fire-service since 1980, served as as a firefighter/paramedic, district chief, and assistant chief of operations with the Saint Paul Fire Department and is a former member of Local’s 21 and 3939.

    In November, Governor Tim Walz and Minnesota Commissioner of Public Safety John Harrington appointed State Fire Marshal Bruce West to be the new Assistant Commissioner of Public Safety. Assistant Commissioner West has been in the fire-service for 41 years were he served with the Anoka Fire Department and as Elk River Fire Chief for 15 years.
    Governor Walz Appoints Tom Thornberg To PERA Board

    Last week Minnesota Governor Tim Walz appointed IAFF 5th District Vice-President Tom Thornberg to the Minnesota Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) Board of Trustees. The eleven member board approves PERA's operating budget, decides legislative policy and priorities, and hires the executive director.

     Vic George form the Canton Police Department is working with a representative of Humana to establish a supplemental health care plan for retired police and fire members. This plan will only be available to those 65 or older. Humana has recently provided a similar plan to Hoover Co. retirees to cover the additional costs to their members that are Medicare eligible.

    Brothers and Sisters, As many of you are aware, I have been traveling the state of Iowa over the past week, along with General Secretary-Treasurer Kelly and 2nd District Vice President Woolbright, speaking directly to our members about the importance of caucusing for Joe Biden. We are excited about the possibility of a strong fire fighter showing at the February 3 Caucus.

    Around 3:45am Monday, January 13th Local members responded to a house fire in the 3600 block of S. Downing St. in Cherry Hills Village. When members arrived on scene they found a house fully involved in fire and immediately began fighting the fire defensively from the outside of the structure.

    Passing of Firefighter Philip Norris - C4 Aide, Retired Philip P. Norris, age 68, of Peabody and formerly of Lynn, died on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the Kaplan Family Hospice in Danvers, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the loving and devoted husband of Joan M. (Hurley) Norris with whom he shared 48 years of marriage.

    The Missouri State Council of Fire Fighters is saddened by the tragic news of the line of duty death of IAFF Local 3112 Member, Firefighter/Paramedic Charles “Chuck” McCormick. Brother McCormick died battling a house fire with West Peculiar Fire Protection District." Brother McCormick is survived by his wife Rachel and three sons. Funeral arrangements to follow.

    At 6:21 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2020, Local member responded to multiple reports of a vehicle accident involving a structure at 5331 S. Delaware Street in Littleton. A sedan traveling westbound on Rafferty Gardens Ave. crossed over Delaware Street, collided with a parked car, then struck an apartment building.

With the holiday being this week and per our Union By-Laws, Article VIII, Section 1, If the first Wednesday or Thursday is a holiday, the regular meetings will be held on the second Wednesday and Thursday.     Today marks the 10th anniversary of Battalion Chief Jeffrey Christ’s line of duty death while with Littleton Fire Rescue. Battalion Chief Christ gave 27 years of selfless and dedicated service to our communities and unfortunately died of a job-related brain tumor.

       Saint Paul Firefighters Local 21 regrets to announce the passing of Retired Firefighter Al Blesener.  Firefighter Blesener passed away on December 14, 2019. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 11:00AM at Fish Lake Lutheran Church in Harris, Minnesota. Visitation one hour prior to the service.
    Retired Chief David "Whitey" Melton

    Metro-Dade Firefighters regret to announce the passing of Retired CFO David "Whitey" Melton on December 28, 2019. He is the brother to retired CFO J.D. Melton, the Uncle to CFO Gary Melton and Uncle to retired Captain Bob Suit. Whitey was hired on 10/26/1959 and retired on 04/10/1994. He was 87 years old. May he Rest in Peace.

    BAR - New Haven has once again brewed a beer to support a fallen firefighter, in what seems to be an unfortunate recurring event.  “Last Alarm IPA” was brewed to honor Worcester, Massachusetts Fire Lieutenant Jason Menard, who selflessly gave his life fighting a four alarm fire on Nov. 13th, 2019.
